An open letter I made to Mojang regarding future updates
#1
I originally posted this on reddit but figured I should post it here too:

Hello,

A huge feature added to the game should be backwards client compatibility, here is my case why.

Like many individuals who have played Minecraft for years, running server is a hobby of mine.

To us individuals there's always one thing which is greatly dreaded: Updates

Updates are something any vanilla Minecraft user looks forward to, even as a server owner there are new features which I may find useful.

However one thing that is not looked forward to is being forced to update your server in a hasty matter which is essentially what the game does.
You're not literally forced to update but if you would like your server to have any success staying on an old version of the game is not an option.
It's not an option because Minecraft clients immediately get the recommended newer version of a client which as a result causes players not to be able to connect to your server. When it comes individuals looking for Minecraft servers they're not going to bother backdating their client just to connect to your server.

For a normal server which gets most of its content from the default gameplay, updates are not a problem.
However there's an ever growing number of Minecraft servers which utilize custom content, create custom content, and alter gameplay. To these servers updates add little as they create their own content and do not rely on updates. These servers do not need updates and have a solid foundation built on the current game mechanics.

Normally most Minecraft updates are not an issue, if there's a broken feature you fix it, if there's a new exploit you patch it. 1.9 is different and likely future updates will be too. The size of the 1.9 update is colossal and there are multiple features which will be impossible to cleanly disable if needed (one example is dual wielding). A fix for this would be to simply let newer clients connect to older servers with official support. The other option would be to have clients fetch the server version when connecting.

Minecraft is a very developed game and many developers like to create their own path. This is one of the reason Minecraft has been such a huge success and will continue to be so. This would be an amazing gift to the community to not pressure the many unique servers which are not in need of official updates. The new updates from Mojang are not bad, just not needed in some situations for those who like to do their own thing. Updates should be something server owners want to do, not are forced to do.
